London 2018, third place...

After the brilliant victory in 2017 on the same track in Queen Elisabeth Olympic Park, on July 8th, 2018 Team Zero C with a refined version of Escorpio, managed to grab a spot on the podium with the 3rd place in "Battery Electric - Prototypes" category.

This year, our work had been focused on overcoming several performance weaknesses; although the pre-race testing sessions were promising, the race results didn't match the expectations.

Therefore, gaining motivation from the new challenges, we are now ready for the hard work to come back on top and fight for the victory.

Since 2007, lecturers and students of the school participate in Shell Eco-marathon Europe, a competition between school and university teams for low energy consumption vehicles, with a prototype called "Escorpio" in honor of one of the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci, the Italian scientist from which the school takes its name.

Over the years, following the variations in race regulations and the effect of changing the energy source, the vehicle has gone through several evolutions that have accompanied the growth of the design and constructive capabilities of the team, whose purpose is also to encourage the growth of personal and specific skills of the students participating in both the track and the preparation work.

Bearing witness to the ability to aggregate and teach to work in a team, we have the continued collaboration of those who have been part of the team in the past: some of the current members are already graduate, and continue to work on and give their knowledge contribution.

This is also a fundamental example for young people who every year replace those who necessarily leave the school: we hope that those who go out and face the working life could benefit of what they have learned during their school years, working together in Team Zero C.

Team ZeroC

Team ZeroC is the name of the group of students and teachers of ITIS "Leonardo da Vinci" High School in Carpi (MO), involved in the Shell Eco Marathon Europe competition.

The origin of the competition dates back to 1939, in a Shell Research Laboratory in the US, as a friendly wager among scientists: the target of the bet was to get the most mileage per gallon of fuel in their vehicles. The competition evolved, spreading to Europe. The Shell Eco-marathon in its current form Began in 1985 in France, attracting thousands of young engineers and scientists from 20 European countries.

The principle of the Shell Eco-marathon is simple: to design and build a vehicle that uses the the least possible amount of energy to cover a certain distance. Teams can create futuristic prototypes with the goal of reducing consumption, by maximizing efficiency.

Vehicles can be powered by conventional fuel (diesel, gasoline, gasoline / LPG) and not (GTL, electric batteries, bio-ethanol, hydrogen).

Technical Institutes and Universities of Europe challenge in the competition, always introducing new innovative technological solutions year by year.

Escorpio is the name of the prototype with which our team participates in the competition.

The name comes from one of the many inventions of Leonardo da Vinci: it was a vessel used in wars to collide with the enemy ships with its metal rostrum, that makes the other ships sink.

But do not worry! Our team has no warlike intentions and under the bodywork of Escorpio you will only find wires, gears, wheels and a very calm (and short) ...... driver!

London 2018: 3rd place in the battery electric prototypes category.
